The film's temporary failure had obvious consequences: it contributed to the collapse of the United Artists studio and destroyed the reputation of director Michael Cimino, a rising star in filmmaking. Cimino's previous film was The Deer Hunter, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1979.
