Soichi Yokoi, was born in 1915 in the city of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan. He became a seamstress before enlisting in the army in 1941. In July 1944, American forces returned to the island, participating in a bloody battle to take control of the island from the Japanese. Yokoi's regiment was annihilated I’m Actually Thirties Shirt and Yokoi himself was said to have died in the fierce battle according to the official announcement issued by the Japanese government in 1955. Yokoi still remembers when he began to flee, American soldiers drove Jeeps around the island and shouted for the Japanese to surrender.
