The Hiroshima Prefectural Government (Japan) recently announced its operating plan for fiscal 2022, which includes the demolition of two of the three government-owned buildings left over from the World War II atomic bomb explosion. The two buildings were just 2.7 kilometers from the center of the explosion. According to a 2017 assessment, two buildings could collapse if there was an earthquake stronger than level 6 on Japan's 7-level earthquake scale. On August 6, 1945, American B-29 bombers dropped the Little Boy bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Little Boy weighing about 4.4 tons, exploded at an altitude of about 580 meters above the ground. The bomb destroyed much of the city and claimed the lives of 140,000 people. Another atomic bomb, Fat Man, fell on the city of Nagasaki three days later, killing about 40,000 people.
