A group called the Mexican-American Anti-Defamation Commission protested against this stereotypical image, prompting Frito-Lay to change Bandito's appearance so he wouldn't appear sly. David Segal, who wrote about the character for Slate.com in 2007, explains: "He's come off as friendly and likeable, but still wants to steal your chips."
